“I have been playing polo for 40 years. I have never had as much help with my polo as I have since joining Gav’s Academy.”

“I learned more in the first three months than in the seven years I had been playing.”
- Barry Cloete

“My handicap was raised from one to two goals, and much of it was because of the Academy.”

FEATURED IN:

WHY HARD WORK ALONE ISN’T ALWAYS ENOUGH

You May Not Need More Practice. You May Need a Better Diagnosis.

Most polo players who feel stuck are not short of effort.

You may already be stick-and-balling, playing chukkas, taking lessons, watching games and trying to apply everything you have been told.

But repetition only helps when you are repeating the right movement, making the right decision and working on the right problem.

Practice Doesn’t Make Perfect. Practice Makes Permanent.

When your technique and understanding are correct, repetition builds the habits you want.

But when the technique is wrong - or you have misunderstood what is actually causing the problem...

More practice will just reinforce the very habit that is holding you back.

For example, this may be you...

WHAT YOU THINK:

“I need to hit the ball further and more consistently.”

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT MAY ACTUALLY BE HOLDING YOU BACK:

Your grip, seat, posture, balance, timing, swing plane - or the way the horse is travelling beneath you.

WHY MORE REPETITIONS MAY NOT HELP:

Hitting more balls with the same underlying fault may teach your body to compensate for it, rather than correct it.

WHAT YOU NOTICE:

“I’m always late and never seem to get enough time on the ball.”

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT MAY ACTUALLY BE HOLDING YOU BACK:

Ball focus, poor 360 vision, hesitation, incorrect positioning or not knowing who to mark and who owns the line.

WHY MORE SPEED MAY NOT HELP:

Going faster will not solve the problem when you are not man focused, reading the play too late, or accelerating towards the wrong place.

WHAT YOU NOTICE:

“My horse is too strong, difficult or unresponsive.”

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT MAY ACTUALLY BE HOLDING YOU BACK:

Your balance, hands, use of the aids, gaps in the horse’s training, discomfort, tack or bitting.

WHY MORE PRESSURE OR STRONGER BITTING MAY NOT HELP:

Often treating the visible symptom can create more resistance without correcting the underlying cause.

Polo is not a collection of separate skills...

  • Your riding affects your horse and your swing.
  • Your horse affects your ability to reach and execute the play.
  • Your tactical understanding affects how much time you have on the ball.
  • Your confidence and preparation affect whether you can apply any of it under pressure.

The problem may appear in one part of your polo while the real cause begins somewhere else...

❌ That is why the first step is not simply to practice more.

✅ It is to identify what you should be practicing.

THE GAVSAYS POLO ACADEMY IS A COMPLETE IMPROVEMENT SYSTEM - NOT JUST A VIDEO LIBRARY

Identify the Problem. Learn the Correction.
Apply it. Get Feedback.

The GavSays Polo Academy brings together four things most players rarely have in one place:

  • A clear way to identify their current stage.
  • Coaching across every connected part of polo.
  • Practical ways to apply what they learn.
  • Expert feedback to confirm that they are doing it correctly.

OUR FOUR STEP STRUCTURE:

1. IDENTIFY YOUR CURRENT BOTTLENECK

Use the Polo Success Path video lesson and guidebook to establish your current stage, see which milestones you have already reached and identify what deserves your attention next.

You stop asking:
“What should I watch?”

And start knowing:
“This is the skill I need to work on now.”

2. LEARN THE RIGHT CORRECTION

Access the relevant coaching across the 5 Pillars of Polo Success:

  • Riding.
  • Horses.
  • Swing technique and ball control.
  • Tactics, strategy and anticipation.
  • Fitness, psychology and mental preparation.

Because the pillars are connected, you can work on the real cause rather than endlessly treating the symptom.

3. APPLY ONE PRIORITY AT A TIME

Use the relevant drills, exercises, examples and action steps to take the lesson out of the screen and into your riding, stick-and-ball sessions and chukkas.

You do not need to watch every lesson.

You just need to find and apply the lesson that matters most to you now.

4. GET FEEDBACK BEFORE THE WRONG HABIT BECOMES PERMANENT

  • Submit questions and footage,
  • Learn through swing and riding analysis,
  • Watch real chukka breakdowns,
  • And use the community to troubleshoot what is not working.

Providing you with an ongoing improvement loop, no matter your level:

Identify → Learn → Practice → Review → Improve  Repeat

Start Where You Are - Work on What You Need Next

Whether you are learning correctly from the beginning, trying to break through a plateau or refining your game - your starting point (and your next priority), will be different.

Our 3 Most COMMON Pathways:

YOU ARE CURRENTLY:
LEARNING THE GAME

You are a beginner who wants to build the right foundations from the beginning.

Start with:

  • Polo-specific riding and balance.
  • Grip, posture and swing plane.
  • Safe ball striking at progressive speeds.
  • The rules and line of the ball.
  • Your first educational chukkas.
  • Basic positioning and Man–Line–Ball.

Outcome: Enter your early chukkas with a clearer understanding of what to do and why.

YOU ARE CURRENTLY:
PLAYING, BUT FEELING STUCK

You can play, but the same frustrations keep returning.

You may be:

  • Hitting inconsistently under pressure.
  • Late to the play.
  • Unsure where to position yourself.
  • Struggling with horse control.
  • Fouling or surrendering the ball.
  • Receiving contradictory advice.
  • Struggling to get games (or win them if you do)

Outcome: Identify the real bottleneck, correct it and begin building more reliable habits.

YOU ARE CURRENTLY:
REFINING A COMPETITIVE GAME

You are an experienced player who wants the small improvements that make you more effective and valuable.

Focus on:

  • Shot direction and selection.
  • Penalties under pressure.
  • Advanced ball control and distribution.
  • Reading the play earlier.
  • Positional discipline and communication.
  • Horse production and performance.
  • Playing consistently above your handicap.

Outcome: Become a more dependable player who contributes to every phase of the game.

Different players need different starting points. Every player needs clarity about the next one.

MEET YOUR COACH — GAVIN CHAPLIN

Decades of Polo Experience, Broken Down So You Can Actually Use It

Gavin Chaplin is a former 7-goal professional and South African international who has spent more than 30 years coaching polo players, teams and horses around the world.

He has coached everyone from complete beginners learning their first swing, through committed amateur players trying to raise their handicap, to international teams and players competing at the highest levels of the sport.

But experience alone is not what makes Gav's coaching valuable.

His real strength is his ability to watch a player, horse or play unfold, identify the underlying problem and then break the correction down into simple stages... so you understand not only what to do, but why it works and how to practise it.

That ability has helped individual players progress, struggling teams turn their results around and established high-goal players continue refining their games.

The GavSays Polo Academy was created to make that same coaching available to players anywhere in the world.

A Coaching Career Built on Results:

98% WIN RECORD COACHING THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL TEAM

Gav achieved a 98% win record over five years coaching the South African National Team, including reaching the final eight of the 2008 Polo World Cup.

FROM 23 STRAIGHT LOSSES TO A TWO-YEAR TURNAROUND

Gav took over coaching Jan Newman's 12-goal "Wexford" team after a 23-game losing streak. The team then lost just once over the following two years.

ONLY 3 LOSSES IN 3 YEARS

While coaching Leo Baxter's Stonefield teams, the 22-goal team lost only three games across three years, and Leo's handicap rose from -1 to 2 goals during the same period.

8 JUNIOR TEAMS ENTERED. ALL 8 QUALIFIED.

In 2009, Gavin coached eight HPA Beaufort junior teams - and all eight qualified for Cowdray week, producing two winners and six second-place finishes.

Gav is OUTSTANDING!

"Gav is OUTSTANDING! He has a fantastic framework to help you grow in Polo! Thank you for all that you do, Gav!"

I think GavSays is the absolute best tool out there for anyone at any level of polo

"I have been a member of GavSays for a few years now. I think this is the best tool anyone can use to improve their polo. At any given moment of your day, you can access GavSays and have a virtual lesson at your fingertips. If you take an hour lesson at home, you will pay far more for that one lesson than the academy costs for months! And how many of us retain all that is said in that one hour lesson? With the academy, you can go over the videos again and again and Gav and Rob will answer any questions you may have. You can send videos of yourself to Gav for critique. You can send videos of your game for review, too! A bonus perk is it is a wonderful way to connect with people around the world. I think GavSays is the absolute best tool out there for anyone at any level of polo; from beginners, to horse trainers, to weekend warriors, to high rated professionals, Gav can help us all."

Frequently Asked Questions:

I’m a complete beginner. Will I know where to start?

Yes. The Academy is structured to help you identify your current stage before deciding what to study.

You will begin with the Getting Started process and Polo Success Path, then focus on the foundations most relevant to you - such as riding, grip, swing plane, rules and preparation for your first chukkas.

You are not expected to understand or watch everything immediately.

I’ve been playing for years. Will the Academy be too basic?

No. The Academy covers foundational principles and more advanced applications.

Experienced players use it to refine issues such as shot consistency, penalties, ball control, positional play, anticipation, set plays, horse performance and decision-making under pressure.

Strong fundamentals remain relevant at every handicap, but your starting point and priorities will be different from those of a beginner.

Can online coaching really improve a physical skill?

Watching alone is not enough.

That is why the Academy combines instruction with drills, demonstrations, swing and riding analysis, chukka reviews, Q&A and opportunities to submit footage.

  • The lessons help you understand the correct principle.
  • The practice exercises help you apply it.
  • The feedback helps you confirm that you are applying it correctly.

Do I need to watch every lesson?

No.

The Academy is a resource you can continue using as your polo develops.

Start with your current stage and biggest priority. Work through the relevant lessons, apply them and then return for the next priority.

The goal is not to complete the largest number of videos.

The goal is to improve your polo.

I already have a local coach. Do I still need this?

The Academy is not intended to replace good in-person coaching.

It helps you get more from it.

You can study a concept before your lesson, revisit it afterwards, prepare better questions, review demonstrations repeatedly and continue learning between coaching sessions.

It also gives you access to specialised instruction that may not be covered during your limited time on the field.

I use hired or borrowed horses. Is the Academy still relevant?

Yes.

The riding, swing, tactics, rules, anticipation, positioning and mental-preparation coaching can be applied regardless of whether you own your horses.

The horse-training sections may also help you better understand the behaviour and responses of the horses you ride, although your ability to make long-term training changes will naturally depend on your access to them.

What if I cannot attend a live session?

Questions and footage can be submitted before the relevant session, and then session recordings are made available inside the Academy, on demand, so members can learn regardless of time zone.

Can I submit my own swing, riding or chukka footage?

Yes.

Each month, members can submit their own swing footage, riding footage and short playing clips for our Swing & Riding Analysis sessions.

The best way to submit footage is through our Analysis Submission Form, as this allows us to download the video and review it properly in editing software - slowing it down, pausing it, viewing it frame by frame and replaying key moments where needed.

You can also post footage in the Requesting Feedback channel inside the Academy community, although the submission form is preferred when you want the most detailed video analysis.

For the clearest feedback, we recommend that your footage is:

  • Recorded in landscape/widescreen, not portrait.
  • 1080p HD or higher where possible.
  • Filmed close enough that we can clearly see you, the horse, the mallet and the relevant movement - but far enough away that nothing important moves out of frame.
  • Kept reasonably steady and free from excessive zooming.
  • Recorded at 60fps if your phone or camera allows it, as this gives us smoother slow-motion playback. This is helpful, but not essential.

For swing analysis, try to film from an angle that clearly shows your full body, horse and mallet throughout the stroke rather than filming too tightly.

For riding analysis, make sure we can see enough of both you and the horse to assess your seat, balance, rein use and the horse’s response.

Short clips from games are also welcome where there is a specific play, decision or technique you would like Gav to review.

ALSO - You do not need to attend the live session for your footage to be reviewed.

What about full chukkas?

Members can also submit full chukkas for consideration for our monthly Chukka Analysis sessions.

We preferably use chukkas submitted by Academy members, but because a full chukka requires considerably more review time, we cannot guarantee that every submitted chukka will be selected.

If yours is selected, Gav will break down the play in detail—looking at positioning, marking, anticipation, decision-making, use of space, tactical options and the moments where different choices could have produced a better result.

A few tips before filming

Good footage makes it much easier for us to give you useful feedback.

Try to avoid:

  • Filming from so far away that the player is only a small part of the screen.
  • Filming so closely that the horse, mallet or swing disappears out of frame.
  • Portrait video where important parts of the play are cut off.
  • Heavy digital zoom.
  • Very shaky footage.
  • Clips where another horse, player or obstacle repeatedly blocks the view.

You do not need professional camera equipment - a modern phone is normally more than adequate if the angle, distance and lighting are good.

The goal is simple:

Give us a clear enough view that we can see what is really happening, and not just the result of the shot or play - so that we can give clear and concise feedback.

Which rules does the Academy teach?

The Academy explains widely applicable principles but refers to specific governing rulebooks where necessary.

Because interpretations and wording may vary between jurisdictions, members should also check the current rulebook used by their national association or club.

How do billing, cancellation and the guarantee work?

Your billing frequency depends on the membership option you choose:

  • Monthly Membership: billed once per month.
  • Annual Membership: billed once per year.

There is no minimum-term commitment beyond the membership period you have already paid for, and you can cancel your subscription at any time.

You can cancel directly through your account profile or simply contact us at support@gavsays.com and ask us to cancel it for you.

When you cancel, no further payments will be taken, and you will continue to have full access to the Academy until the end of your current paid membership period.

For example, if your monthly membership renews on 25 August and you cancel on 30 August, you will retain access until 25 September. Your membership will then end and you will not be charged again.

What about refunds?

Your membership is covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee.

If you decide the Academy is not right for you, you can request a refund of your most recent membership payment within 30 days of that payment being made.

After the 30-day refund period has passed, cancelling your membership will stop the next renewal, but your current payment will not be refunded and you will retain access until the end of the period you have already paid for.

If you ever need help with your membership, billing or cancellation, just contact support@gavsays.com and we'll be happy to assist.

YOUR NEXT BREAKTHROUGH STARTS WITH THE RIGHT PRIORITY

Stop Guessing and Start Working on What Will Actually Move Your Polo Forward.

You can continue collecting random advice, practicing whatever appears to be wrong and hoping that more repetitions eventually solves it.

Or you can begin with a clear process:

  • Identify your current stage.
  • Find the real bottleneck.
  • Learn the right correction.
  • Apply it with purpose.
  • Get feedback as you improve.

You do not need to solve every part of your polo today.
